Canyon, Texas – The Angelo State softball team jumped out to an early lead and made a late comeback against the nation's top-ranked team; however, West Texas A&M ended the game with a 7-6 win over the Rambelles on Friday evening at Schaeffer Park.
Laylonna Applin doubled with one out in the first inning, scoring on
Tatiana Trotter's ninth triple of the season to open the Rambelles' account. Trotter would score on a
Keilei Garcia infield single to double the lead.
A two-out single by
Averie Gunther in the second inning, and a Lady Buffs error on the play, saw the Rambelles plate another run.
Laylonna Applin would leg out a chopper to shortstop, which scored Gunther and made it 4-0.
The Lady Buffs would strike for their first run in the bottom of the second and would score four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Layni Tanner led off the sixth inning with an infield single before
Erin Plunkett's double down the left field line would tie the game. A two-out triple from Gunther would see Plunkett cross home plate to give the Rambelles a 6-5 lead.
The hosts would score two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, eventually holding on for the win.
Matie Wolkow started inside the circle, throwing the first 1.2 innings. Gunther would throw the next 1.1 innings in relief, and
Amelia Hatthorn and
Torrey Hogan would combine for the final three innings.
The Rambelles are now 36-14 on the season and 27-13 in conference play. The two teams close out the series, and the regular season, tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
