Game 7 Preview: No. 21 Rams to Host Midwestern State on Homecoming

Now in the midst of a two-game losing streak, the No. 21 Angelo State football team will return home to host the Mustangs of Midwestern State for homecoming night on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1st Community Credit Union Field at LeGrand Stadium

LAST TIME OUT:
The Rams suffered their second straight loss, falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville 24-19 on the road last Saturday. Third downs proved to be a major factor on both sides of the ball as ASU was 3-14 offensively and allowed 9 of 19 defensively. Furthermore, the Rams streak of turnovers in a game was snap at 20 games.

While the Mustangs hold the edge in the series, the Rams have won four of the last five matchups. The last time the two faced off in San Angelo was in 2023, it was then when Gerald Gardner tossed for 334 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rams to a 27-12 victory.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS:
  • The Mustangs enter the weekend riding a two-game winning streak following a 0-4 start to the 2025 season.
  • MSU most recently downed Sul Ross State 69-23 behind 342 yards rushing and six passing touchdown performance from quarterback Sean Jastrab.
  • Midwestern State currently has the seventh best scoring offense in the LSC, averaging 29.7 points per game. While on the other side of the ball, the Mustangs have the eighth best scoring defense in the country, allowing just over 35 points per game.

LSC Special Teams Player of the Week ATOP THE TAKEAWAYS:
Jeff Girch's defense has been no stranger to forcing turnovers, as the Rams currently sit among the nation leaders in turnovers forced with 14; nine interceptions and five forced fumbles.

RAMS ON THE RUN:
Four players have recorded over 100 rushing yards for the Rams this season including Cameron Dischler (227 yards, 3 TD), Jayden Jones (256 yards, 1 TD), Chad Pharis (142 yards, 2 TD) and Kaeden Smith (209 yards, TD).
 
HEAD COACH PROFILE – JEFF GIRSCH
Jeff Girsch recorded his 50th career win as head coach to open the season, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach that milestone. He holds a career winning percentage of .769 and has been selected as the LSC Coach of the Year three times in his career, most recently in 2024. Prior to being named head coach, Girsch spent five years as the defensive coordinator for the Rams.

QUICK HITS:
  • The Rams are currently the sixth best offense in the LSC, averaging 31.5 points per game.
  • On the other side of the ball, the defense sits in third as they give up 21 points per game.
  • Corey Sandolph is second in the LSC in receiving touchdowns with six.
  • Owen Seaver continues his tear this season as he has recorded 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, both leading the LSC in their respective categories.
  • Xavier Walton is among the nation's leaders with four interceptions.

2025 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
FULLER EARNS PRESEASON POTY:
Quarterback Braeden Fuller was selected as the Lone Star Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. A 2024 Harlon Hill Award Finalist and the 2024 OPOTY for the conference, Fuller led the conference in passing yards (2,318) and touchdowns (19). He also added 10 rushing touchdowns and 678 yards on the ground.
 
THREE RAMS ON D2FOOTBALL.COM ELITE 100 WATCHLIST:
The Rams had three players named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watchlist. Newcomer Stefaan Forbes was named First-Team punter while defensive end Owen Seaver was selected Second-Team Defense and Fuller was named to the Offensive Squad.
 
PICKED TO REPEAT IN LSC PRESEASON POLL:
Totaling 292 points and 23 first-place votes, the Rams were selected first overall in the LSC Preseason Poll. Rounding out the top three were Central Washington at two and UT Permian Basin at three.
