Game 11 Preview: Rams Travel to West Texas A&M to Conclude Regular Season

The Angelo State football program will look to close out the 2025 regular season on the road as the Rams travel north to take on West Texas A&M on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Rams wrapped up the home schedule with a 31-7 loss at the hands of Western Oregon as ASU celebrated Military Appreciation and Senior Day.

Last Meeting: Nov. 16, 2024 (San Angelo, Texas – ASU, 56-19)
The Rams hold the advantage in the all-time series, winning 22 of the 37 matchups. ASU has won the last three meetings and is 7-3 over the last 10 games against the Buffs.

SCOUTING THE BUFFS:
  • The Buffs enter the weekend 6-4 overall with a 6-2 record in Lone Star Conference play.
  • Last week, WT traveled to Wichita Falls and left defeating Midwestern State by a final score of 56-42.
  • Offensively, the Buffs sit second in the conference, scoring 37.2 points and 474.3 yards per game.
  • Contradicting the prior two opponents, West Texas A&M sports a heavy passing attack led by quarterback RJ Martinez, who averages 329 yards per game and has tossed 29 touchdowns to just six interceptions.
  • Defensively, the Buffs have allowed 29.7 points and 383.3 yards per game, both ranking sixth in the LSC.
  • WT has numerous players across the defensive leaders in the LSC, including Miles Hill, who ranks fifth in the LSC with 81 tackles.
  • Ashton Reynolds has recorded 10.0 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, ranking fifth and second respectively within the LSC rankings.
  • Jamel Acosta-Lewis leads the Buffs in passes defended (12) and interceptions (2).

Jeff Girch's defense has been no stranger to forcing turnovers, as the Rams currently sit among the nation leaders in turnovers forced with 19; 13 interceptions and six forced fumbles.

SPECIAL TEAM SHINE:
Special Teams have proven to be difference makers as the Rams sit fourth in the country in blocked kicks with six.

RAMS ON THE RUN:
Five players have recorded over 100 rushing yards for the Rams this season, including Cameron Dischler (449 yards, 3 TD), Jayden Jones (431 yards, 4 TD), Kaeden Smith (324 yards, 3 TD), Chad Pharis (186 yards, 2 TD) and Israel Kaloso (120 yards).

SACKIN' SEAVER
Owen Seaver continues his tear this season as he has recorded 1.56 tackles for loss and almost one sack per game, both among the leaders in the the LSC and top 10 in the DII in their respective categories.

FORBES FLIPPIN' THE FIELD:
Stefaan Forbes has proven his preseason First-Team punter nod by D2Football as the senior averages 41.0 yards a punt, fourth in the LSC and 25th in the nation.
 
HEAD COACH PROFILE – JEFF GIRSCH
Jeff Girsch recorded his 50th career win as head coach to open the season, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach that milestone. He holds a career winning percentage of .769 and has been selected as the LSC Coach of the Year three times in his career, most recently in 2024. Prior to being named head coach, Girsch spent five years as the defensive coordinator for the Rams.

QUICK HITS:
  • The Rams offense is ranked the fifth-best offense in the LSC, averaging 32.7 points per game.
  • On the other side of the ball, the defense sits in fourth as they give up 21.9 points per game.
  • Hunter Wallis and Corey Sandolph are tied for fourth in the LSC in receiving touchdowns with seven each.
  • Xavier Walton is among the nation's leaders with four interceptions.

2025 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
FULLER EARNS PRESEASON POTY:
Quarterback Braeden Fuller was selected as the Lone Star Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. A 2024 Harlon Hill Award Finalist and the 2024 OPOTY for the conference, Fuller led the conference in passing yards (2,318) and touchdowns (19). He also added 10 rushing touchdowns and 678 yards on the ground.
 
THREE RAMS ON D2FOOTBALL.COM ELITE 100 WATCHLIST:
The Rams had three players named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watchlist. Newcomer Stefaan Forbes was named First-Team punter while defensive end Owen Seaver was selected Second-Team Defense and Fuller was named to the Offensive Squad.
