SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team defeated Texas A&M International twice on Sunday afternoon at Mayer Softball Field, winning game one 8-0 in a five-inning, run-rule win before closing the weekend with a 6-2 in game two.
Erin Plunkett led off the Rambelles in game one by reaching base on an error, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a
Tatiana Trotter single up the middle.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning, when the Rambelles broke the game open with seven runs.
Averie Gunther led the inning off by getting hit with a pitch, and
Lauren De La Cruz walked, putting two runners on for Cater Smith, who singled up the middle to double the lead.
Bri Waters was plunked as a pinch hitter to load the bases, and Plunkett's sacrifice fly would score another run.
Back-to-back singles by
Laylonna Applin and Trotter made it 5-0.
Ashton McMillan capped the scoring off with a three-run home run down the left field line that stayed fair despite the heavy winds.
Cheyenne Floyd picked up her tenth win of the season, going the full five innings and allowing two hits, one walk and one hit by pitch while striking out six Dustdevils. This was Floyd's fourth complete-game shutout of the season and second of the weekend.
Plunkett started game two by drawing a walk and scoring later in the inning on a Trotter double.
Abby Brand would double the lead with a squeeze bunt in the second inning. The Dustdevils would tie the game in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally.
The Rambelles responded with a two-out rally, courtesy of back-to-back singles by Brand and Plunkett. Applin doubled in a pair of runs, and Trotter produced another RBI to make it 5-2 Rambelles.
A two-out single by Applin in the sixth inning capped off the scoring as the Rambelles claimed game two 6-2.
Throwing 2.1 innings in relief,
Matie Wolkow earned her third win of the season, scattering three hits in shutout work.
Bri Waters threw the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out three.
