Canyon, Texas – The Angelo State softball team defeated Colorado Mesa 3-2 in their opening game of the South Central regional this evening at Schaeffer Park on the campus of West Texas A&M, with the nation's eighth-ranked team scoring all three runs in a fifth-inning rally.
A couple of walks for the Mavericks in the third inning put runners on base, and a ground ball through the right side scored the first run of the game.
Ally Distler's leadoff home run in the fourth inning doubled the Mavs' lead.
Ashton McMillan led off the bottom of the inning with a single before scoring on 
Averie Gunther's double down the left field line.
A fielder's choice by 
Carter Smith forced an error by Mavericks starting pitcher Preslee Christensen, which put Gunther and Smith in scoring position.
The next batter, 
Lauren De La Cruz, singled up the middle, plating her senior teammates and giving the Rambelles a 3-2 lead.
Cheyenne Floyd improves her record to 26-6 this season, going the distance and allowing four hits and two runs while striking out eight Mavericks.
The Rambelles reach the 45-win mark for the first time since 2018; the Rambelles face off against West Texas A&M tomorrow at noon.
