SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University football team delivered a dominant performance on Homecoming Saturday, shutting out Sul Ross State 64-0 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
The Rams improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Lone Star Conference play, scoring in all four quarters while holding the Lobos scoreless. The Blue and Gold finished with 416 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers, turning three of those takeaways into defensive touchdowns.
Making his first career start,
Maddox Maher opened the scoring with his first career touchdown pass, a 16-yard strike to
Alan Dobbins before
Cameron Dischler broke free for a 41-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter to give the Rams a 14-0 lead.
The Rams continued to build their advantage in the second quarter, starting with a 28-yard field goal from
Paden Maass. The defense then took over, as
Brody McGee recovered a fumble and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 24-0.
Maher connected with
Kegan Stelmazewski for a 15-yard touchdown later in the quarter before
Hunter Boudreaux intercepted a Sul Ross State pass and returned it 45 yards for another score. A second fumble recovery, this time by
Athen Dominguez, resulted in an 81-yard touchdown return and sent Angelo State into halftime with a commanding 45-0 advantage.
The Rams added nine points in the third quarter on a 37-yard field goal by Maass and a 1-yard touchdown run by
Jayden Jones. Maass connected on another field goal from 18 yards in the fourth quarter before
Carson Woods found Arthur Miller for a 6-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring.
Maher completed eight of 13 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Woods added 50 passing yards and a touchdown on two completions, while
Ayden Arp finished with 35 passing yards.
Dischler led the Rams on the ground with 67 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
Israel Kaloso added 47 rushing yards on seven attempts, while
Ashton Dickens contributed 36 yards on four carries.
Dobbins paced the receiving corps with two catches for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Jaymez Beaner added a 44-yard reception, while
Chuck Gilbert III recorded a team-long 52-yard catch.
Defensively, Angelo State held Sul Ross State to 184 yards of total offense, including -33 yards on the ground. Ten players notched a tackle for loss while the Rams recorded a season-high five sacks and intercepted three passes, with Boudreaux returning his interception for a touchdown. McGee and Dominguez each added a fumble-recovery touchdown.
The Rams will now hit the road to Wichita Falls to face Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
