Football Falls to UT Permian Basin on the Road

MIDLAND, Texas – The Angelo State University football team dropped a 20-10 decision to UT Permian Basin Saturday night at Astound Broadband Stadium. The Rams held the Falcons scoreless in the third quarter but were unable to overcome a 17-3 halftime deficit.

With the loss, the Rams fell to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in Lone Star Conference play while the Falcons improved to 6-3 and 5-2, respectively.

UTPB opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter before adding a 17-yard rushing touchdown and a 34-yard field goal in the second to take a 17-0 lead.

Angelo State got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Paden Maass connected on a 39-yard field goal with 5:47 remaining in the second quarter.

The Rams carried that momentum into the second half, opening the third quarter with a five-play, 73-yard scoring drive. Maddox Maher found Canon Wiese for his fifth touchdown in two weeks, this time a 52-yard catch-and-run to the endzone, cutting the deficit to 17-10. The Blue and Gold defense kept UTPB off the scoreboard throughout the quarter, but the Falcons added a 45-yard field goal with 2:10 remaining in the game to account for the final margin.

Maher completed 20 of 33 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown. Wiese led the Rams with 33 rushing yards on 10 carries and added a 52-yard touchdown reception. Donny Bishop paced the receiving corps with eight catches for 71 yards, while Carter Woehl added five receptions for 35 yards.

Defensively, Hunter Boudreaux, Justin Fox and Samuel Odelami each recorded six tackles to lead the Rams. Kevin Odikpo and Eugene Liger each intercepted a pass, while Mathew Onyejiaka contributed 1.5 tackles for loss, including half a sack.

Angelo State returns home next Saturday, Nov. 7, to host Eastern New Mexico at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Rams celebrate Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day.
