San Angelo Stadium

San Angelo Stadium

The Rams play in one of the finest facilities in all of Division II football, San Angelo Stadium.  The facility seats 17,500 fans in a horseshoe configuration.  The facility, built in 1956, is owned by the San Angelo Independent School District and is also the home to the SAISD athletic teams.  The stadium is used by many civic groups for a variety of community activities.

The facility has a recently refurbished seven-lane all-weather track surrounding the field, which plays host to the San Angelo Relays, one of the largest prep track meets in the country.  The track and stadium facilities are also used by the community for both recreation and philanthropic activities.  The stadium’s first game occurred on Sept. 28, 1956, as the San Angelo Bobcats defeated Arlington Heights in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 fans.  The stadium was expanded in 1963 to its present horseshoe configuration of 17,500 seats.  The stadium underwent a major renovation in 2005 with the addition of state-of-the-art Safe Play Plus artificial turf, installed by the Safe Play Corp. of Dallas.  Other minor renovations, including expansion of the press box and resurfacing of the track, have helped maintain the stadium as one of the top facilities in the country.

On a side note, photographs of the stadium were featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Modert Art in New York City as an oustanding example of modern engineering.
