ASU Cheerleaders
The award-winning ASU cheerleaders proudly support the Rams and Rambelles and encourage fans to take part in the pride and pageantry of ASU athletics. Aside from cheering for football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball, the cheerleaders also work with school administrators in promoting positive school spirit and leadership on campus and throughout the community. In addition to these events and maintaining their academics, the squad competes nationally. Selection to the squad is competitive, and tryouts are held each spring.
ASU Ram Band
The ASU Ram Marching Band is one of the finest units of its kind in the country with numerous awards and national event appearances to its credit.
The band performs unique and creative halftime shows at each Ram football home game and at selected road games. The band also provides entertainment throughout the game and for other ASU athletic and campus events.
ASU Mascot
Angelo State University’s athletic teams are proud to have as their mascot the mighty Ram.
While many other universities feature a big horn ram as a mascot, ASU is unique in that its mascot is the domestic Rambouillet sheep, a compact white-wooled animal with long curving horns.
The Rambouillet sheep breed originated in Spain over two centuries ago with the famed Merino flocks of that country. Exportation of the valued sheep, known to be a producer of the finest wool in the world, was forbidden by the Spanish government until 1786. The exportation ban was finally lifted by the King of Spain and a small herd was sent to the Rambouillet farm near Paris, France. The breed is still bred at the farm to this day, using stock descended from the original herd shipment from Spain.
The City of San Angelo is the headquarters for the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and is considered the top breeding center for the sheep in the United States. There are numerous Rambouillet ranches in the San Angelo. San Angelo remains one of the major buying and shipping centers for the fine Rambouillet wool.
The ASU Agriculture Department maintains a flock of the sheep that has been honored with various regional, national and international awards over the years at wool and sheep competitions. One of the rams from this herd serves as a mascot at each of the Ram home football games. The ram, nicknamed "Dominic," stands on the sidelines with his agricultural student handlers.
In addition to Dominic, the costumed Roscoe D. Ram attends nearly all home ASU athletic events to represent the spirit of all Ram and Rambelle fans. Roscoe has been honored through the years as one of the top mascots in the country at various cheerleading and spirit camps. He also helps future mascots from around the area with mini-camps in the summer.
