Ross Smithey enters his second season as assistant cross country and track & field coach at Angelo State, specializing in throws. With 15 years of coaching experience, Smithey has produced numerous All-Americans in pole vault, javelin, decathlon, 4x400m relay, heptathlon, triple jump, shot put, and 400m.

In his first year with the Rams and Rambelles, Smithy helped Elvis Kryukov to an NCAA Division II national championship in the decathlon while coaching eight LSC champions, six First-Team All-Americans, and three Second-Team All-Americans. The Belles finished second overall in both the LSC Indoor and Outdoor championships as a team while the Rams finished third in both competitions.

Prior to ASU, Smithey was the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country at Texas A&M – Commerce where he led the Lions to a men’s LSC indoor title in 2016. He coached two Division II Indoor national champions in the 800-meter run and the triple jump while his team tallied 19 All-Americans and 24 school records. He was named the 2016 USTFCCCA South Central Regional Indoor Head Coach of the Year. Spending two seasons as the Lions’ assistant track and field coach, Smithey helped TAMCU to 10 All-American honors, eight LSC titles, and a 2015 LSC Men’s Indoor championship while earned Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year from the USFTCCCA.

Smithey was a standout athlete at Doane University, earning All-America honors in both the decathlon and heptathlon. He holds USATF Coaching Level 1 & 2 certifications.Â
