Back in 2011, Keith McCutchen stepped away from coaching after 37 years but told the San Angelo Standard-Times that he wasn't ready to call himself retired. It turns out that he was right.
McCutchen has been named the Angelo State head golf coach and will look to build on the success the Rambelles experienced in 2015 when they placed in third at last season's Lone Star Conference Championship which matched the best conference finish in program history.
"I love and missed coaching and am really excited about this opportunity," McCutchen said. "I'm really looking forward to coaching college golf and helping to bring this team together. Golf is something you do individually, but in college it's also about being on a team. I want our players to have fun, but also to compete at a really high level."
After graduating from Angelo State in 1974, McCutchen went on to coach in various roles and locations throughout west Texas from 1974-2011. His last position was as the Bronte ISD Athletic Director (1992-2011) when he was also coaching golf and volleyball. He was the Bronte golf coach from 1989-2011, the Bronte head football coach from 1989-2000 and guided the volleyball team to a 77-11 record in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. During his coaching career he helped 12 golfers to the state tournament, his football team to the playoffs six times and led the Bronte volleyball team to a state runner-up finish in 2009.
"We are really excited about getting Keith on board because he is a guy who has ASU ties and brings a wealth of experience to our golf program," ASU interim athletic director
James Reid said. "I think his experience in coaching and his passion for golf is going to be great for our golf program."
McCutchen takes over for Chandra Hall who coached the Rambelles for two seasons before stepping down to pursue other career opportunities. McCutchen played golf for the Rams from 1970-74 and was an NAIA All-American who advanced to the national tournament in all four years at ASU. His first experience coaching golf came at San Angelo Central High School from 1974-1980.
"Playing golf in college was a great experience for me," McCutchen said. "I was able to meet a lot of people through the game and really developed a love of the game and competition that propelled me on to wanting to coach. I really want our players here to enjoy their time during college while they are excelling on the classroom and out here on the course."
