Lizzie Virgl

Lizzie Virgl enters her first season coaching the Angelo State throwers in the 2023-24 season. 

Virgl comes to Angelo State from RMAC institution Chadron State, where she coached the throwers for the Eagles for the past two seasons. At Chadron, she tripled the size of throws roster, growing it from eight athletes to 24. She also helped plan and host the RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past spring, where her thrower, Kyla Sawvell, won the gold in the hammer throw, the silver in the discus and bronze in the shot put. Overall, she led the throwers at Chadron State to break eight school records and two conference records in the hammer and weight throws, and coached four First Team All-Americans and three Second Team All-Americans. 

Prior to Chardon, Virgl worked as an assistant coach at Division II school Tiffin. 

Virgl started her coaching career at her alma mater, Southern Illinois - Edwardsville, as a student assistant before working as a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State. At SMSU, Virgl's throwers broke 12 school records, and she coached Rebecca Manteuffel to become a three-time All-American in the weight and discus throw, as well as being a Second Team All-American in the shot put. Academically, she increased the throwers' GPA from a 2.1 to a 3.3 team GPA. 

Virgl earned her bachelor's degree in Art and Design, Art Education Specialization from SIUE; she earned her master's degree in Physical Education, Coaching of Sport Specialization from SMSU.
