A two-sport all-American and academic all-American during his time at Angelo State University, Dawson earned a Bachelor of Science in May 2001 and a Master of Science in December 2005 from ASU.

A three-time national champion, winning the 2000 and 2001 national titles in the discus and the 2001 crown in the shot put, Dawson still holds the ASU record in the discus with a throw of 195-8 in 2001. A five-time All-American for the Rams, Dawson was part of four top 10 teams at the NCAA D-II national championships, three of which (1998, 1999 and 2001) placed in the top five.

A four-year letterman at defensive tackle for Angelo State, Dawson led the Rams to a 25-16 record and three Lone Star Conference South titles. A Second Team All-American and two-time First Team All-LSC selection, he was named the conference’s Defensive Lineman of the Year.

In 2001, Dawson was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and recognized by the National Football foundation as a National Scholar-Athlete for his achievements as a student-athlete at ASU.

An undrafted free agent, Dawson was in the NFL 2002-2004, spending time on the practice squads of the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and the Houston Texans; as well as playing in NFL Europe during the spring of 2003 with the Berlin Thunder.

Returning to ASU to complete his master’s, Dawson was a graduate assistant coach with the ASU Track and Field teams for the 2006 outdoor season. Coaching primary the discus and shotput student-athletes, Dawson lead a squad that qualified 5 throwers for the NCAA Division II National Championships; with the top performers being a national runner-up in the women’s discus and a 6th place finisher in the women’s discus.

In May 2009, Dawson was inducted into the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Athletes Hall of Fame. Dawson was also inducted into the Angelo State University Athletic Hall of Honor in 2012

Recently retired after a career in banking and finance with the Farm Credit System, Dawson is a native of Water Valley, TX.
