Angelo State University Athletics

Joe’l Mathews is the Angelo State University Associate Athletic Director of Academics and Senior Woman Administrator where she has helped ASU student-athletes along their academic path since 2013. 

Mathews oversees academic support initiatives for all of ASU student-athletes including tutorials, testing programs and advising programs. She works closely with coaches and athletic administration to guide student-athletes toward academic success.

“My favorite part about working in Athletics is helping students achieve goals that they never thought possible just by being a support system for them,” Mathews said. “Their faces when we present their Student-Athlete sash at graduation is my favorite! My main goal is to support the student athletes in the process towards receiving their degree and assist in their move to successfully transition into the workforce.”

Prior to her role in athletics, Mathews was an admissions counselor for three years at Angelo State. She was responsible for recruitment and enrollment of potential students. She developed knowledge of admission standards, placement test, curriculum prerequisites, degree requirements and restrictions and expectations for potential undergraduate applications.
 
A Bronte native, Mathews received her bachelor of business administration in management from Angelo State in 2007 and her advising certificate in 2012. She earned her master of education in student development and leadership in higher education from ASU in 2012.

Mathews resides in San Angelo with her husband, Shane, and daughter Mia.
