Mark Petross, a former Angelo State Ram Track and Field team member from 1981-1986, enters his third season as a throws coach and second year as the head throws coach at ASU. Petross also brings 34 years of coaching experience at the high school level in Texas to Angelo State. 

In 2025, he coached five student-athletes who qualified for the Division II National Championships - Fedra Florentin (shot put), Tiamara Hill-Johnson (discus), Esma Pajt (hammer), Marie Schuler (hammer), and Kamryn Williams (discus). He coached Schuler to the LSC outdoor title in the hammer throw. 

As a student-athlete at Angelo State, Petross was a two-time national qualifier in the shot put, a two-time national qualifier in the hammer, and a national qualifier in the discus. He earned All-American honors in both the shot put and the hammer as a Ram.

Petross earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from ASU before going on to earn his master’s in education. He and his wife, Yvonne, have been married for 38 years and have two children, Jeff and Sara.
