Angelo State freshman Sandy James has been named the Lone Star Conference South Division Co-Hitter of the Week for the second time this season after setting the league's single-season home run record last week. James shared the award with Tarleton State's Brittany Terry.
James, a native of Kilgore, belted five home runs last week to give her 20 home runs on the season, breaking the LSC record of 19 homers set by four previous players. She went 9-fof-18 from the plate with nine RBI and 12 runs scored while adding a double. James drew six walks, including three intentional, without being struck out in ASU's five games last week.
The Sabine High School product went 3-for-7 from the plate on Thursday as the top-ranked Rambelles swept St. Mary's in a key non-conference doubleheader. James had a home run in each contest to take over the ASU single-season home run mark, ending the day with 17 long balls.
Over the weekend, James blasted three more home runs as the Rambelles took two of three at No. 23 West Texas A&M. She added her 18th home run in the series opener on Saturday, extending her home run streak to six straight games, and added two homers on Sunday as ASU hit an NCAA Division II record nine home runs against Lady Buffs. James went 6-for-11 from the dish against WTAMU with five walks.
James is currently hitting a team-best .429, ranking her sixth in the LSC, and also leads the conference in RBI (50) and runs scored (42). She was also named the South's Hitter of the Week on Mar. 3. James becomes the first two-time winner of the South's award this season and marks the fourth time in seven weeks that the honor was given to an ASU player.
The Rambelles return to action Wednesday as they host Incarnate Word in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is 3 p.m. at the ASU Softball Complex.
