The Matches
• Southeastern Oklahoma: Angelo State will face Southeastern Oklahoma for the 13th time in program history Thursday. The Rambelles hold a 10-2 advantage over the Storm. Last Season, the 'Belles defeated Southeastern Oklahoma in five sets in Durant, Okla. The last time Southeastern Oklahoma was victorious over Angelo State was in 2006 when the Storm swept the 'Belles in San Angelo.
• East Central: The Rambelles play East Central Saturday, Oct. 23, for just the third time in program history. East Central is looking for its first victory over Angelo State as the 'Belles defeated the Tigers, 3-2, last season and swept them in 2008.
The Coaches
• Angelo State: Chuck Waddington (Rensselaer, 1993) took over the ASU program in 2008 and has since guided the 'Belles to a 50-38 overall mark. Waddington has propelled the Rambelles to back-to-back conference appearances in 2008 and 2009. Under Waddington's tutelage, the 'Belles finished third in the LSC Tournament last season.
• Southeastern Oklahoma: Jenn Corkum (Siena, 2003), was hired as the head coach of the Southeastern Oklahoma volleyball program after spending two years as an assistant coach at Saint Leo (Fla.). The Newtown, Conn., native helped lead the Lions to a 59-15 record. In her firsthead coaching position, she has put together a 6-12 overall mark and a 3-5 Lone Star Conference record.
• East Central: Dave Thorn (Whitman College, 1992) has been the head coach of the East Central volleyball program since its inception in 2008. In two years with the Tigers, Thorn has guided them to a 29-64 overall mark. Before his arrival at East Central, he was the head coach at Texas-Pan American where he led the Broncos to a school-best 112 victories in nine years and was voted Independent Coach of the Year in 2000 by all Division I independent coaches.
The Program
• The 'Belles went 2-0 last week defeating conference foes Cameron, 3-1, and Midwestern State, 3-0, on the road.
• Angelo State is riding a four-match winning streak and has won seven consecutive conference matches.
• ASU is in third place in the Lone Star Conference standings with a 7-1 conference record.
• Head coach
Chuck Waddington added assistant coach Qi Wang to his staff over the summer. Wang brings a wealth of experience to Angelo State as he was the former head coach at Florida Tech, Northern Michigan and Truman State. The China native led Truman State to the national title game in 2002 and 2004, and was named Division II National Coach of the Year in 2002.
• Former East Central standout Holly Hicks also has joined the 'Belles coaching staff as graduate assistant. Hicks enters her first year of coaching with numerous hours of playing time on her resume. The Round Rock, Texas native competed as a member of the Austin Juniors, one of the top club programs in the state, and earned an athletic scholarship to Texas Tech.
• ASU Volleyball was picked to finish third in the conference behind West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian University.
This Week's Opponents
• Southeastern Oklahoma: The Storm comes into the Junell Center with a 6-12 overall mark and a 3-5 Lone Star Conference record. Southeastern Oklahoma is coming off of a 3-1 win over Eastern New Mexico Oct. 16. The Storm is looking for it's first victory over ASU under first-year head coach Jenn Corkum. Southeastern Oklahoma is led offensively by Brittany McDonald and Chelsea White. McDonald, a junior middle blocker, is hitting a team-best .339, which leads the conference, and has amassed 55 total blocks. White, a freshman setter, leads the Storm with 333 assists and has a team-best 19 service aces.
• East Central: The Tigers are looking for their first road win this season and have put together a 3-21 overall record along with a 1-7 conference mark. East Central is looking to get back on the winning track after dropping seven consecutive matches. The Tigers most recent loss came at the hands of Arkansas-Fort Smith when they droppped a 3-0 decision Oct. 18. East Central is led by Noelle Cope's 190 kills, Shayla May's 521 assists and Megan Kimak's 336 digs. Sarah Nelson owns a team-best .237 hitting percentage, while Tatiana Booth leads the squad in total blocks with 40 and Hannah Adams has a team-high 22 service aces.
