‘Belles Hit the Road to Face Two Conference Foes

Stats | Match Notes (Week 6)

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team concluded its four-game homestand and now look ahead to two conference road matches this week. The 'Belles (6-3-1, 3-0 LSC) will open up with Texas A&M Commerce at 7 p.m., on Friday at the A&M Commerce Soccer Complex in Commerce followed by a 1 p.m., match-up with Texas Woman's on Sunday at the TWU Soccer Field.

Good things came in threes last week: the Angelo State soccer team improved to 3-0 in conference play; ASU climbed three more spots in the NCAA Regional South Central Rankings; and Ashley Brown, Shannon Dean and Hanna Horeis each tallied their first goals of the season. The No.5-ranked 'Belles edged Central Oklahoma, 4-1, on Oct. 1, then outlasted Southwestern Oklahoma, 2-1, on Oct. 3 when Brown kicked in the game winner in the 87th minute. Angelo State outshot its opponents, 30-17, last week, while holding a 16-10 advantage on shots on goal during the seven-day stretch.

Texas A&M-Commerce is 6-3 this season and 2-1 in conference play behind 13th-year head coach Neil Piper. The Lions lead the overall series against the Rambelles, 12-2-3. In last year's contest, A&M-Commerce broke open a 1-1 tie when Meagan Lasley kicked in the game-winner in the 84th minute to give the Lions a 2-1 victory. ASU's Brown scored the Rambelles lone goal in the 71st minute. Senior forward Chelsey Haight leads this year's Lions team in goals scored with 11 and is second on the team in assists with two.

“Commerce is constantly at the top of the Lone Star Conference battle and this year they are leading the conference in goals against,” said head coach Travis McCorkle. “Their style is a style that's very different than any other team. They are big and physical so we're going to have to come ready to play to get the result we want."

Ninth-year head coach Fleur Benatar has guided the Texas Woman's soccer team to a 3-6-1 record this season and hold a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. Goals have been evenly dispersed for the Pioneers, with six players recording a goal this season. In last year's match-up, TWU outlasted Angelo State, 1-0, when Chastity Hayter netted the only goal in the 17th minute. Angelo State outshot the Pioneers, 12-6, but only had six shots on goal as the two teams battled a brutal crosswind throughout the afternoon.

“Texas Woman's is a team that always finds a way to get great results during conference play,” said McCorkle. “They put together a schedule at the beginning of the year where they may not get the results they hope for, but come LSC matches they're ready to play and we need to be ready.”
