COMMERCE – The Angelo State soccer team was outshot 15-6, trailed in corner kicks 10-2 and had freshman defender
Kara Edwards hospitalized after suffering an eye injury, but despite the obstacles the Rambelles persevered to collect a 1-0 double-overtime road win against Texas A&M Commerce at the A&M Commerce Soccer Field Friday evening.
In the 105th minute, Angelo State's
Brandie DeBacker headed in the game-winning goal off a
Lauren Carnes corner kick to end the double-overtime saga. This marked DeBacker's team-best fifth goal of the season – three of them game winners. ASU (7-3-1, 4-0 LSC) goalie
Melanie Peterson collected her fourth shutout of the season and 12th of her career against the Lions (6-4, 2-2 LSC).
“The girls were motivated to win for their teammate that went down in the second half,” said third-year head coach
Travis McCorkle. “It was a tough, physical game for us. It was an ugly win but to quote Brad Gilbert, 'Sometimes winning ugly is a great feeling.'”
Angelo State will return to the pitch against Texas Woman's Sunday at 1 p.m., at the TWU Soccer Field in Denton, which should test the 'Belles.
“Texas Woman's is a team that always finds a way to get great results during conference play,” said McCorkle. “They put together a schedule at the beginning of the year where they may not get the results they hope for, but come LSC matches they're ready to play and we need to be ready.”
