Kaelen Valdez recorded her fourth double-double of the season and tied a career-high with 13 kills in Angelo State's 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-15) sweep of Lone Star Conference foe Central Oklahoma. The 'Belles hit .310 in the match and have won nine three-set contests this season.
Valdez slammed a match-high 13 kills on 27 attempts with only one attack error to hit .444 in the contest. The Helotes native also notched 11 digs and two service aces to help pace Angelo State (9-10, 5-1 LSC).
Alex Woolsey registered 33 assists, five digs, five kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while
Maddie Huth and
Debbie Ohl combined for eight block assists.
Chelsea Gibson knocked down seven kills and hit .308 in the match, while liberos
Caroline Cleveland and
Alexa Williams each recorded nine digs on defense.
The Rambelles quickly jumped out in front, taking a 6-0 lead to start the first set. ASU dominated the court in game one, hitting .423 and limiting Central Oklahoma (14-7, 4-3 LSC) to a negative hitting percentage. Woolsey led the offense collecting 11 assists helping the 'Belles to a 25-9 win.
UCO scored first in the second set, but Angelo State rallied back taking a 7-4 advantage on a Gibson kill. The Bronchos refused to go quietly as they rallied back to take a two point lead (12-10) on a Kristen Wilson kill followed by a Rambelle attack error. ASU showed its resiliency and bounced back to take the lead for good forcing the Bronchos into three consecutive miscues. The 'Belles offense got back on track and Valdez notched back-to-back kills to end the game, 25-17.
The Bronchos had the first serve in the third set, but the Rambelles won the ball back on a Valdez kill. With four lead changes early on in the third set, it looked like the game could go either way. With a 10-10 tie and Valdez behind the service line, the 'Belles took control of the game as Valdez served up an ace followed by back-to-back Broncho miscues. Returning to the court after a UCO timeout, the Rambelles when on a 12-4 run to win the set, 25-15.
Fleming Smurthwaite led the Bronchos with a double-double as she collected 18 assists and 10 digs. Alex Richardson had a team-high seven kills and Zuela Adom recorded six kills in the setback.
The Rambelles will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 14, when they battle it out with Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., at 7 p.m.
