‘Belles Battle, Fall to Central Oklahoma, 69-65

Final Stats (.pdf)

EDMOND, Okla. –
Three Belles scored in double-figures and sophomore Lauren Holt had a double-double, but Central Oklahoma took advantage of a pair of crucial fouls in the closing seconds of the game to win a back-and-forth affair, 69-65, in Edmond, Okla., on Saturday afternoon.

Holt finished the game with 10 points and as many rebounds for the first double-double of her collegiate career. The Christoval native also added an assist and a block in the effort. Angelo State (4-2) was led offensively by reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Lindsey Mahone as she led the 'Belles with 13 points. Mahone also contributed five boards, three steals and one block. Freshman Giselle Aguirre continued her offensive tear as she tallied 11 points, three rebounds and one block in the setback.

The Rambelles took an early 7-0 lead on a trey from Holt, followed by a pair of buckets from Mahone and Holt. The Bronchos (5-1) would not let the Belles' seven-point advantage deter them as they came back to not only tie the game at seven, but eventually take a two-point lead (11-9) on a jumper by Ashley Beckley.

The two squads played each other well, matching each other point-for-point in the see-saw game. Down by five points as the first half was coming to a close, Aguirre sunk a jumper with 41 seconds left in the opening 20 minutes to pull the Belles within three (37-34).

Central Oklahoma returned to the court after halftime and scored on the next three possessions to give the Bronchos their largest lead of the game (44-38). The Rambelles refused to quit as they fought back pulling within two (50-48) as senior Camille Perkins drained a three from beyond the arc. As the Bronchos continued to sink their shots, the Belles countered with buckets of their own and stayed within striking distance.

The 'Belles trailed by three (65-62) in the final minute of action and it looked like it could be anyone's game, but the Bronchos took advantage of a pair of fouls by ASU to extend their lead to seven as they sunk all four free throws (69-62) with just three seconds left in regulation. Mahone was able to nail a three-point shot to beat the buzzer, but the 'Belles fell to the Bronchos 69-65.

The Bronchos were led by Fuxa who registered 20 points to lead all scorers. Fuxa tallied nine rebounds and three steals for UCO. Beckley collected a double-double as she recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Brittany Morgan posted 14 points with three boards in the win.

The Belles look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to battle it out with Northeastern State on Monday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m.
