SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State soccer team suffered its first loss of the year to Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday, 2-0, at the ASU Soccer Field in the final game of the Angelo State Invitational. Despite the loss, the Rambelles continued to attack offensively, outshooting the ThunderWolves, 17-10, while holding an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
Angelo State (2-1-1) methodically moved the ball around the pitch in the first half, but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. The Rambelles had 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of play with six being on frame; however the sure hands of the ThunderWolves' goalkeeper, Savannah Thompson, kept ASU scoreless heading into the break.
“We started off the game really well, but need to do better with the opportunities given,” said soccer head coach Travis McCorkle. “In order to get wins, we can't let opportunities slip away and we did that today.”
Colorado State-Pueblo (2-2) was awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute and Morgan Purkey capitalized, giving the ThunderWolves a 1-0 lead. The sophomore was not finished, as she kicked in another one from 18-yards out over the outstretched mitt of ASU keeper, Melanie Peterson.
Brandie DeBacker fired off seven shots for the 'Belles with four of them on frame, while Ashley Brown tallied three shots on goal. Melanie Peterson registered all 90 minutes in the box for ASU and recorded two saves.
Angelo State will return to the pitch Thursday in Odessa as the Rambelles square off with Texas Permian-Basin (2-1) at 5 p.m. For more information, log on to www.AngeloSports.com.
