Chelsea Gibson led Angelo State with 13 kills and Alisa Meredith chipped in 10 as Angelo State snapped Tarleton State's nine-game winning streak and claimed the team's first Lone Star Conference victory in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) sweep at Stephens Arena Thursday.

“I think this was one of our best efforts in terms of sticking to a plan, making some adjustments and working our system,” Angelo State head coach Chuck Waddington said.

Gibson led the way with five kills in the first set against the TexAnns (9-1, 1-1 LSC) and Meredith contributed an all-around effort serving, setting and blocking. After a back-and-forth opening, the Belles received a boost as Meredith served up an ace and gave the team its first lead at, 7-6, since the opening point. Angelo State pushed the lead to five (16-11) and never relinquished the advantage.

In the second set, Tarleton opened with a 7-2 run, prompting an ASU time out. The Belles regrouped in the huddle and answered with a 7-2 run and tied the match at 9-9. Gibson made several key plays down the stretch as Angelo State was able to gain the lead, 15-13 and keep it after Tarleton made runs to tie it at 17 and again at 21. The Belles finished off the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-21.

ASU completed the sweep with a 25-20 win in game three. The Belles never trailed in the final set and jumped out to a 12-6 lead. A 6-3 run by Tarleton pulled the TexAnns within two (21-19), but ASU was able to hold on for the win.

The TexAnns were led by senior Rachel Wolf who contributed a team-high nine kills along with eight digs. Senior libero Shea McBrearty registered 11 digs and junior setter Jessie Hartman notched 17 assists and five digs.

Angelo State continues conference action next week when it travels to Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's University on Sept. 23 and 25, respectively, before heading to Topeka, Kan., for the Lady Blues Tournament at the end of the month.
