SAN ANGELO — Eastern New Mexico earned a 23-21 victory over Angelo State at San Angelo Stadium Saturday behind 464 yards of total offense in the Lone Star Conference game. The last time the Greyhounds beat the Rams was five years to the day, when ENMU earned a 38-14 win in 2005.
Eastern New Mexico (2-3, 1-2 LSC) outgained Angelo State 464 to 391 in total offense, while ENMU quarterback Wesley Wood threw for 370 yards and ran for 56. Darian Dale paced the Greyhounds receivers with eight catches for 96 yards.
"Eastern came in here with a great game plan," ASU head coach
Will Wagner said. "We were back on our heels in our first half, but our defense did a great job of responding in the second half."
On the opening possession, the Rams (3-2, 0-2 LSC) strung together a seven-play, 56-yard drive that was capped off by a
Blake Smith 1-yard touchdown run; however, the Greyhounds countered with a 1-yard run by Wood.
On the Greyhounds second possession of the game, the Hounds were pinned at their own three-yard line. Wood proceeded to connect with Michael Matthews for a 97-yard touchdown which put Eastern New Mexico ahead, 14-7. The play was ENMU's longest, since JT Thompson's 99-yard run against East Central in 2007. Wood registered his second 300-yard passing day of the season, and the seventh of his career.
Angelo State answered when Hamblin found
Joey Knight for a 35-yard touchdown strike to tie the game (14-14). The two teams would trade touchdowns before halftime, but a missed extra point would give the Rams a 21-20 advantage.
The high scoring first half was replaced with a field possession second half, as a field goal would be the only points. That field goal came from the right leg of Michael Cottingham to put the Greyhounds up, 23-21, with 3:35 left in the third quarter.
With 5:57 left to play, the Rams marched from their own four-yard line into Eastern territory. The 11-play drive ended after
Jarred Martin's 47-yard field goal attempt was blocked with 1:43 left to play. ENMU would take over and eventually earn a 23-21 victory.
Angelo State will take on West Texas A&M in Canyon next Saturday.
"They are a hard-nosed defense and our offense had some moments when we were able to move the ball," Wagner said. "But we did the same thing as last week when started shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and costly mistakes. Hopefully our guys will respond well against West Texas A&M."
