BOX SCORE
SAN ANGELO – The No. 15 ranked Midwestern State Mustangs gained 704 yards of total offense and scored the most points against an Angelo State team in the 47-year history of the football program in a 68-20 Lone Star Conference win over the Rams on Saturday at San Angelo Stadium.
The Mustangs (6-0, 5-0 LSC) led 52-7 at halftime and had already accumulated 533 yards in that time. Angelo State (3-4, 0-4 LSC) was limited to 330 yards of offense, which is the lowest this season, and dropped its fourth straight game.
“I thought more than anything, they were more physical than we were on both sides of the ball,” ASU head coach
Will Wagner said. “Their offensive line took it to us and so did their defensive line. That's disappointing for us.”
Abilene Christian had the previous record of 60 points against the Rams in 1968.
Tristan Carter led the Rams with 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Carter's second 100-yard rushing game of the season included running for two touchdowns on 11 carries, while
Blake Smith ran for 59 yards on 14 carries.
Jake Strickler, starting for the first time this season at quarterback for an injured
Blake Hamblin, threw for 96 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to
Joey Knight. Strickler finished the night 11 of 17 passing and an interception.
“I thought that we were moving the ball well but we had two huge costly fumbles for turnovers and then had a pick,” Wagner said. “Hopefully we'll learn sooner than later.”
Brandon Kelsey led Midwestern State with 237 yards passing and touchdowns against the Rams' defense. Jimmy Pipkin ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, while Brandon Kelsey ran for 134 yards and another touchdown. Sheldon Galloway led the MSU receivers with two touchdowns.
The Rams are on the road next weekend to play at 2 p.m. at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.
“I told our guys that we still have four games left and that we can still go out with a winning record,” Wagner said. “But we are going to have to play a lot better and have more fight to do that.”
