No. 17 Belles Take Down TWU in Four Sets

BOX SCORE

SAN ANGELO
Maddie Huth recorded her team-leading 19th kill on the final play of the match to give the 17th-ranked Angelo State Belles a 3-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas Woman's University on Thursday at Stephens Arena.

“The net was open with no one there to block it,” Huth said. “That's a pretty good feeling.”

The Belles (24-2, 13-1 LSC) won the match 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, and in the process have now won more matches than any other ASU team since the 1992 season. Texas Woman's fell to 10-13 overall (8-6 LSC) with the loss. ASU takes its winning streak to six games with the victory - its second highest this season after starting the year with 15 straight.

“We adjusted well in this match,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “In a match like this against a good team, it's all about the little things you can do to help your team win. After the second set where we lost, we went into the locker room and made the adjustments we needed to do to get the win. It was a back-and-forth good win for us.”

Huth, a sophomore from The Colony, added four digs to her stats, while Chelsea Gibson had 13 kills and two digs. Alex Woolsey finished the four-set match with 41 assists and 10 digs, while Kaelen Valdez and Shelby Wilt led the Belles with 16 digs.

“We did a good job with our passing and serving in this match,” said ASU sophomore Kaitlyn Standard, who had seven kills and three digs. “We needed to block better than we did, but everything else we did got them out of their system and got us the win. I'm pretty pleased with the way we played overall.”

Viktorija Jablonska led Texas Woman's with 20 kills and five blocks, while Chloe' Tate and Katellyn Osborne each contributed eight kills for the Pioneers. Hannah Marshall added 29 assists and Morgan Wilson led TWU with 16 digs.

Angelo State returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce back at the Junell Center. The Belles will come into their third game of the week with a 10-1 home record this season.

“We just have to finish the week strong,” Huth said. “It's a long week with three games, so we have to keep up our energy. We can't get lazy or too over confident.”

Additional Player and Coaches Quotes

Head coach Chuck Waddington
On Maddie Huth's performance against TWU and development this season:
Maddie was terminal. She blocked well and took care of the ball. She is just getting more and more steady for our team as the year goes on. When she gets the ball, she puts it away.

On Debbie Ohl who did not play in the Belles' 3-1 win over TWU:
She hit her head in the game on Tuesday and is day-to-day with a concussion. We'll have to wait to see how she is doing on Saturday to see if she'll be able to play against West Texas A&M.

Kaitlyn Standard: Sophomore from San Angelo
On the Belles' home match on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce:
We have to keep a high intensity level and maintain this level of excitement that we are enjoying right now. We can't let up. We want to come out strong and win in three.
