The Game
Saturday's game between Angelo State and Tarleton marks the final game of the regular season. The Rams and Texans are both sitting at 5-5 on the year and looking to climb above .500 with a win. Both teams are coming off wins, as ASU earned a 34-14 Lone Star Conference victory against Incarnate Word, and Tarleton defeated Division III's Millsaps College seven days ago, 44-3.
The Series
Angelo State may hold a 14-13 lead in the all-time series but it has been over a decade since the Rams walked off the field with a victory against Tarleton. The Texans have won 10 consecutive games in the series. Angelo State's last win against Tarleton was a 45-25 decision in San Angelo on Oct. 28, 2000. In last year's showdown in Stephenville, Angelo State carried a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter; however, 17-unanswered points by the Texans gave Tarleton State a 37-34 victory.
The Coaches
Angelo State: Will Wagner (Hardin-Simmons, '96) continues his first year as head coach of the Rams after serving at Northwest Missouri State for 12 years. The Odessa native helped the Bearcats win three national championships as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.
Tarleton: Carey Fowler (Murray State, '94) is in his second season as head coach of the Texans after previously serving as the team's defensive coordinator. Fowler is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference, having spent seven seasons as defensive coordinator at Midwestern State. In his two season, Fowler has an 8-13 career record.
The Program
Angelo State won the NAIA National Championship in 1978 and has won three Lone Star Conference Championships (1978, 1984, 1987). The Rams have seen five NCAA D-II playoff appearances and produced 57 All-Americans. Angelo State has sent 11 student-athletes on to successful NFL careers, including
Pierce Holt, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989, was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff coached at ASU, and has been inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Holt and former Rams' tackle Rodney Cason.
This Week's Opponent
Tarleton State University is located in Stephenville, Texas, and has an enrollment of 9,450. Founded in 1899, the Texans are members of the Lone Star Conference. After going 10-3 and earning a share of the LSC South title in 2009, the Texans finished just 3-8 a year ago and 2-4 in the LSC.
Dynamic Duo
Defensive ends
Lawrence Rumph and
Shiloh Hickman have made an impact in the Rams' front four. On the year, Rumph ranks 18th in the nation with 8.0 sacks, which is best on the team. In Lone Star Conferene games, Hickman leads the conference in sacks, averaging 0.83 per game. In just six games, the junior has recorded four solo and assited on two against LSC foes.
Let There Be Light
The Rams are undefeated during day game this season with a record of 4-0. Angelo State has outscored its opponents 149 to 68, while racking up 395.5 yards of total offense. Running back
Tristan Carter has averaged 90.8 yards on the ground, including five touchdowns for the Rams.
Turnover Tuesday Makes for a Productive Saturday
After a shaky performance against LSC regular season champions Midwestern State midway through the season, the Rams' defense put an emphasis on creating takeaways. Tuesday's practices took on the mantra of Turnover Tuesday, where the defense focused on generating takways. This carried over to the field, as the Rams have forced 11 takeaways in the last three games, including seven against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Stick With Me
Alvin Johnson has earned the nickname “Stick” for being one of the Rams best defensive backs. The junior captain continues to pace the secondary, as he has six pass breakups and a team-high 65 tackles. The Houston native also had his first interception against Texas A&M-Kingsville two weeks ago. The Javelinas were threating, but Johnson picked the ball off in the end zone to end the threat.
Tha Carter VII
Angelo State ranks fourth in the LSC in rushing offense, chalking up 148.4 yards per game. This is in large part to Rams' running back
Tristan Carter. The Tucker, Ga., native is sixth in the LSC in rushing yards per game with 77.4. The senior has turned out four 100-yard performances on the season, and he now has six for his career. Don't be fooled though, as Carter is a dual threat for the Rams' offensive attack. He is second on the team in receptions, hauling in 25 catches this year. The 5-foot 7-inch Carter has punched the ball into the end zone 10 times this year (9 rushing, 1 receiving), which leads the team.
Tip of the Cap, Friend
ASU head coach
Will Wagner and assistant head coach
Theron Aych will wear red visors to honor Scott Bostwick this season after their friend and colleague suffered a heart attack and passed away in June. Wagner coached with Bostwick who was the defensive coordinator at Northwest Missouri State for 17 years before being named the Bearcats' head coach in January.
“Coach Bostwick was like a brother to me,” Wagner said. “We coached together for 13 years and I learned a lot about defensive football from him. He had the biggest heart; he would drop everything he was doing to help you out. He was a great coach, mentor and friend who never lived out his dream of leading the Bearcats out onto the field as their head coach, and that's a shame. Bostwick was famous in the MIAA and around D-II football for wearing a red hat on the sidelines so the defensive players could spot him easily. I am grateful for all he did for me and I wear this red hat to honor him.”
