SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State Belles had three players in double-digit scoring and created 24 turnovers, but lost the rebounding battle 37-18 in a 71-62 non-conference defeat to Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
Paige Weishuhn led the Belles (1-1) with 15 points, while
Lauren Holt scored 13 and
Haylee Oliver 10. Holt paced ASU with five rebounds and
Ashley James grabbed four rebounds and scored three rebounds.
“Our defense was not there, our transition defense mainly,” Weishuhn said. “We let them penetrate down the middle too many times. They got wide open threes and we didn't rebound like we should have. That really hurt us.”
Angelo State fell behind early in the game, trailing 11-4 before taking a15-13 lead. The advantage would be short-lived as the Falcons would tie it at 19-all and then take 31-27 lead into halftime. ASU shot 43.5 percent in the first half, while UTPB shot 52.2.
Tammy Acosta led Texas-Permian Basin (2-1) with 19 points with 14 points coming from the free-throw line and added six assists to her stat sheet. Clarissa Davis led the team with eight rebounds, while Teisha King had seven. Lauren Unger scored 15, Taniqua Ards 14 and Teisha King 12 for the Falcons who have a win over Arkansas-Monticello and a loss to Central Oklahoma on their early-season resume.
“They could shoot and they didn't give up,” Holt said. “They were scrappy. I give them a lot of credit.”
Angelo State returns to action at 6 p.m. next Tuesday against St. Edward's University in Austin before playing in the West Texas A&M Tournament on Friday, Nov. 25, and Saturday, Nov. 26. The Belles will play St. Mary's at 4 p.m. on Friday and Metro State at 4 p.m. in the Saturday game.
