SAN ANTONIO – Lindsey Youngblood tallied 13 points and a career-best six steals to help the Belles to a 53-49 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
Camille Perkins led Angelo State with 15 points and the Rambelles scored 25 points off of turnovers to improve to 8-4 in Lone Star Conference action.
Youngblood added four rebounds and a block in the game, while Perkins contributed two boards, a steal and a block. Sophomore
Lindsey Mahone was just one point shy of a double-double as the forward registered nine points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists in the contest.
The game was close throughout as the Rambelles (15-9, 8-4 LSC South) took their largest lead, 11-5, at 13:27 in the first half on a three-pointer by freshman
Giselle Aguirre. The Belles held onto their slight advantage until the Cardinals evened the score at 13 on a free throw by Ifunanya Mora at 7:36.
Incarnate Word (7-16, 3-8 LSC South) took its first lead of the game on another free throw by Mora (15-16). The Belles quickly regained the lead and took a two-point lead (28-26) going into halftime on a lay-up by
Lindsey Youngblood.
The Rambelles fell behind at the start of the second half, but quickly turned things around as they took a two-point advantage (35-33) on a lay-up by junior post
Paige Weishuhn. However, the Cardinals were determined to hang around as Incarnate Word went on a 15-5 run to claim an eight-point lead, their largest of the game (40-48).Trailing by eight, the Belles went on a 13-1 run to close the game and defeat Incarnate Word by a score of 53-49.
Angelo State led Incarnate Word in steals (12-to-4) and forced the Cardinals into 23 turnovers. The Belles took advantage of the large amount of turnovers as they tallied 12 steals in the game. The Rambelle defense also did not allow Incarnate Word to score a three-pointer throughout the game.
The Cardinals were led by Mora to notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She also recorded a steal and a block. Chloe Wallace registered 10 points and three boards, while Katy Cooke contributed seven points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal.
The Belles travel to Wichita Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 23, to battle it out with Midwestern State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
