WICHITA FALLS – Tough conditions prevented the Angelo State golf team from building on its opening round performance, as the Rambelles finished in ninth place at the Midwestern State Invitational Tuesday. The Belles' had a team score of 319-327 – 646 (+70) on the par-72, Champions Course at Weeks Park.
The windy conditions made it tough for Angelo State's
Krista Czarnecki to build on her strong opening round where she shot a 1-over-par 73 and was tied for first after Monday's action. Czarnecki shot an 84 in Tuesday's final round, but still finished as the Belles' top scorer and in the top 20 of the tournament with a 157 (+13) total.
“Krista is not going to shoot a 73 every time she turns around,” Angelo State's head coach Kathleen Price said. “Yesterday it was beautiful – she didn't have any bad breaks, but today she couldn't catch a break. She had five or six (putts) that could have gone in the hole but never did.”
Joining Czarnecki in the top 20 was
Maury McCormick, who turned in a 6-over 78 on Tuesday and improving by three strokes from her 9-over 81 Monday score. She finished with a 159 (+15) total on the 5,986-yard course.
Courtney Rutledge made the biggest jump, cutting six strokes off her score in round one to finish with a 162 (+18).
Randee Stegman carded an 81-87 – 168 (+24) to round out ASU's scoring.
Skylar Smith shot an 85 in the opening round on Monday, but was disqualified after a scoring error.
Makenzie Stone competed as an individual for the Rambelles and had an 86 on the second day, showing a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round Monday.
“It was very, very windy, but Courtney shot well. Maury started off really shaky, but really turned it around –the first two holes she was 3-over-par, but after that she just evened it out and finished with a 39 (on the back nine). Courthey shot a 78 as she was solid throughout the day,” said Price.
Northeastern State shot a 617 (+41) to win the tournament beating out St. Edwards (618) Central Oklahoma (621), and host Midwestern State (623). Midwestern State's Kendra Whittley took home individual honors as she shot a 147 (+3) total.
