SAN ANGELO – Jade Bell scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to lead Texas A&M-Commerce to a 3-2 Lone Star Conference win over the Angelo State Rambelles on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (2-5, 1-2 LSC) rallied with a
Hanna Horeis goal 10 minutes after Bell drastically altered a 1-1 halftime score, but Angelo State was unable to match the Lions' third goal.
Brandie DeBacker scored ASU's first goal of the game off an assist from
Maggie Schaffer to give the Belles a 1-0 lead. The loss was the Belles' first at home this season and came after topping TAMU-Commerce (4-2-1, 2-0-1 LSC) in both matches played last season – including ASU's win in the LSC tournament.
BOX SCORE
“I think we gave up a couple of soft goals that came back to back,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “I was pleased with the girls' response after we went down two goals. They wanted to fight back and get a result. Unfortunately, we were just too short today.”
Angelo State finished with 10 shots in the game, while the Lions had 20 shots. DeBacker, who tied Sheri Champlin (ASU 2001-04) with 29 career goals with her first-half goal, finished the game with three shots along with Schaffer.
Morgan Harrison and
Taylor Cardinal both saw time in goal for the Belles after Cardinal went down with an injury 30 minutes into the game. Cardinal had three saves in her time in goal, while Harrison recorded five saves in 59 minutes of play.
The Belles return to the ASU Soccer Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Texas Womans' University.
“Whether we are at home or away, we have to fight for wins,” McCorkle said. “It is a very tough conference with all the teams in the conference being so close. We'll watch the video and work on some things tomorrow and hopefully be ready to get a good win against Womans' on Sunday.”
