Rambelles Head to Colorado for Two Matches

Game Notes

SAN ANGELO –
The Angelo State soccer team returns to action this weekend with a pair of games in Pueblo, Colo. against its final two non-conference opponents of the regular season. The Rambelles take on Colorado State University-Pueblo at 5:30 p.m. on Friday before playing at noon on Sunday against Adams State.

All three teams enter the weekend with 1-1 records, including CSU-Pueblo beating Adams State on Monday. CSU-Pueblo beat the Rambelles last year 2-0, while Angelo State took a 1-0 win over Adams State. CSU-Pueblo and Adams State are both members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

“I thought we outplayed them last year in the first half, but they did a good job of coming back in the second half to beat us,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “We have something to prove in the game this year. Adams State is a team that can get results. We have to be able to adjust to the challenges that they present by being a physical team. “

The Rambelles are coming off a 5-0 non-conference win over the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday. Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Harrison recorded her career's first win and first shutout in the home opener.

“I talked at halftime to our team about how important it was for us to complete the shutout,” McCorkle said. “We need to be a team that completes a game regardless of the score. We want to be known as a defensive team and gain some respect for our ability to hold opponents scoreless.”

Sophomore transfer Maggie Schaffer led the offense with three goals, becoming the first ASU player to have a hat trick since 2006. Brandie DeBacker and Lauren Carnes added the other goals for the Rambelles. DeBacker's goal was her second of the season after she scored ASU's lone goal in a 2-1 loss in the season opener against No. 6 St. Edward's. Carnes' goal was her first of the season and the fourth of her career. Hanna Horeis added two assists, while Katie Squires and Trisha Killen also had assists in the win over UTPB.

DeBacker has now scored 27 goals as a Rambelle and is quickly approaching Sheri Champlin's 29 career goals (2001-2004), which is second all-time in the record books behind Dorothy May's 50 goals (1998-2001). DeBacker is currently tied for third all-time with Melissa Farr (1997-2000) with 63 career points.

Angelo State turns its attention to Lone Star Conference action after this weekend. The Rambelles, who went 9-2 last year in LSC play last season, open conference play next weekend at Midwestern State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 and at Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Coaches Quotes

Head coach Travis McCorkle

On the team's improvement from the season opener to the second game:
We did a very good job of pressuring UTPB and had good passes to set up our shots. We didn't do that against St. Edward's.

On Katie Squires' performance in the game against UTPB:
Katie did a great job for us and had a lot of energy on the field and got the ball into good positions for us. I think she is a player that has the potential to get more assists and more goals as the season goes on. The game was against UTPB was a very positive step for her.

On securing a shutout against UTPB:
I talked at halftime to our team about how important it was for us to complete the shutout. We need to be a team that completes a game regardless of the score. We want to be known as a defensive team and gain some respect for our ability to hold opponents scoreless.

On last year's match against CSU-Pueblo:
I thought we outplayed them last year in the first half, but they did a good job of coming back in the second half to beat us. We have something to prove in the game this year.

On last year's match against Adams State:
Adams State is a team that can get results. We have to be able to adjust to the challenges that they present by being a physical team.
