Rambelles Dominate ENMU in 5-0 LSC Victory

Lauren Bateman
SAN ANGELO – Lauren Bateman scored two early goals and the Angelo State soccer team kept up the attack in a 5-0 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.

Maggie Schaffer, Brittany Martinez and Kayla Gregory each added goals for the Rambelles (9-6-1, 7-4-1 LSC) and the ASU defense and goalkeeper Danielle Edwards recorded their sixth shutout of the season. The five goals were the most ASU has scored since a 5-0 win over UTPB in the second game of last season.

“It felt good being able to finish our opportunities,” Bateman said. “We have been working a lot on our finishing and today was the first day that we really clicked.”

Bateman's two goals were the second consecutive home game where she scored two goals and she now leads the team with five goals in her freshman season out of San Angelo Central High School. Trisha Killen assisted in the first goal and Lauren Carnes had her team-leading sixth assist on Bateman's second goal. Schaffer would add the game's third goal shortly after and Martinez would head in a ball off a cross from Sierra Anderson just two minutes after Schaffer's goal to take give the Rambelles a 4-0 lead going into halftime.

“We have the talent to score goals like we did today but we just haven't put it all together,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “It was really good to see us score like that and I think it gives us a lot of confidence going forward. We can break down other teams and put points on the board. It was a great performance.”

Gregory would cap the game's scoring with an 85th minute goal off an assist from Kat Monroe. The goal was Gregory's first and it was also the first assist in Monroe's career. Angelo State finished with a 12-3 shot advantage in the game and 4-0 in corner kicks. Edwards finished with two saves and now has 64 on the season.

Angelo State returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against West Texas A&M at the ASU Soccer Field. Prior to the game the team will honor seniors Lauren Carnes, Hanna Horeis, Karli Maxey, Kat Monroe and Dani Edwards.
