CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team received a career-high 23 points from
Cassi Stegall but were unable to overcome McMurry falling 61-60 at the Lady Buff Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon.
The Belles (2-3) struggled getting rebounds and in the turnover category. McMurry (1-5) took an 36-31 advantage by collecting 12 offensive rebounds and hit four 3-pointers in the first half. Stegall scored 10 of her career-high 23 points in the first half to keep the Belles within striking distance.
The Warhawks came out and extended its lead to 11 points before the Belles started chipping away. ASU hit 50 percent of its field goals in the second half as the Belles defense held the Warhawks to 25 points. McMurry hit 63 percent of free throws compared to the Belles 50 percent.
Stegall was the only player in double figures in scoring with her career high 23.
Leah LeMaire grabbed 10 rebounds and chipped in six points.
Faith Hunt scored nine points in the loss. All three losses this season have come by a combined seven points.
McMurry was led by Riketa Thomas' 17 points while Ashton Jones scored 10. Ana Dominguez collected 13 rebounds and added nine points.
The Belles will start Lone Star Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Eastern New Mexico with tip at 6:30 p.m. CST.
