SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team will finish off the regular season portion of its schedule with a pair of Lone Star Conference road matches this weekend at Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's.
The No. 9 Belles (24-3, 17-1 LSC) start the weekend with a 7 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday before playing the final regular season match of the season at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Denton against Texas Woman's. ASU is 7-1 in conference road matches this season and takes an 11-match winning streak into the weekend.
“Finishing the regular season on the road is always a challenge and these are two very good teams that we'll be playing,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “There are so many distractions at the end of the year with Senior Days and the conference tournament right around the corner. We'll be playing teams that will be emotional in playing their final home games and we have to stay focused if we want to achieve our goals.”
Angelo State enters the weekend in first place in the LSC standings and needs to win at least one of this weekend's matches to earn the program's first out-right conference championship since 1992. The team would also earn the right to host the conference tournament for the first time since 1992 if it can clinch the regular-season title. ASU, which is ranked third in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional rankings, also leads the conference in kills (14.82 per set) and digs (20.99 per set).
Alex Woolsey, who is only three assists away from becoming the all-time career leader at Angelo State, leads the conference with 12.14 assists per set (1,093 total), while
Shelby Wilt is second in the conference with 5.32 digs per set (489 total).
Shelbi Goode tops the conference with a 3.98 kills per set average with
Maddie Huth at 2.99 per set and 11th in the conference. Goode enters the weekend with 350 kill, while Huth has added 257 kills and
Kaelen Valdez 225.
“We have to continue improving,” Waddington said. “There are some areas in our serving and passing that needs to continue getting better and we have used this week to focus on that. We can't waste a moment. It's important for us to finish strong.”
ASU earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) win over the Lions in the first meeting between the two teams this season in a Oct. 6 match at the Junell Center. TAMU-Commerce (20-8, 11-7 LSC) is currently fifth in the conference and are 8-2 on its home court. Rachel Robertson is second in the conference with 3.93 kills per set and leads her team with 373 kills this season, while leading the LSC with a .391 hitting percentage. Jordan Neal is third in the conference with 10.44 assists per set (1031 total) and leads the LSC with 0.38 aces per set.
“They are playing really well this season,” Waddington said. “They have some really good players and are developing into a very tough team.”
The Pioneers (21-6, 14-4 LSC) are currently in third place in the conference standings and have a six-match winning streak going entering the weekend. ASU earned a 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-13) win over TWU in a Oct. 5 match at the Junell Center. Viktorija Jablonska leads the Pioneers with a .330 hitting percentage and is third in the LSC with 3.69 kills per set (336 total kills). Marcela Alves has added 240 kills with Josie Santo adding another 171. Chloe' Tate is third in the LSC with 93 blocks with Morgan Wilson topping TWU with 391 digs.
“Texas Woman's is going to be one of the top seeds in the tournament and have put together a really good year,” Waddington said. “They're very athletic and are always a tough matchup. I expect nothing different in the final game of the regular season against them.”
