Belles Win Double OT Thriller Over West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO, Texas –
The Angelo State women's basketball team defeated West Texas A&M for the first time since the 2004-2005 season with a 77-71 thrilling double overtime victory in Stephens Arena on Saturday night.
 
The Belles (4-3, 2-0) outscored the Lady Buffs (2-6, 0-2) by six points in the double overtime period and freshman Faith Hunt hit three big free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. ASU held WTAMU to just four points in the final frame.
 
During the first overtime the Lady Buffs jumped out to a four-point lead before Oliver hit a 3-pointer to cut it to one. Faith Hunt hit a jumper with 56 seconds left to tie the game and neither team could score before the buzzer. Angelo State's first lead of the game didn't come until there was 1:26 left in the first overtime.
 
The Belles had to battle back after being down 57-52 with 1:14 to go in the second half. Leah LeMaire, and Cassi Stegall each scored to make the score 57-56 with 21 second left.
 
West Texas A&M's Non Oliva went to the foul line and hit the first of a one-and-one before missing the second. Haylee Oliver grabbed one of her game-high 12 rebounds and was fouled with nine seconds left. Oliver hit both free throws to send the game to overtime.
 
The Belles shot 47-percent from the 3-point line connecting on eight shots. The Lady Buffs shot better from the field at 40.6-percent compared to 37.5-percent.
 
LeMaire scored a career-high 24 points and Oliver recorded her first double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 boards. Stegall added 12 points and four assists.
 
West Texas A&M had Lacee Logan score 27 points including five 3-pointers. Chontiquah White chipped in 18 points and eight rebounds.
 
It is the first overtime game since 2007-2008 and first double overtime win since 2008-2009. The win is also Sally Walling Brooks' 396 of her career.
 
The Belles return to action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. as Tarleton State will come to town.
