SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team fought back in the second half and saw the lead change seven times but were unable to hang on as West Texas A&M took a 61-56 decision in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Saturday night.
The Rams (10-14, 3-11) were up by five after a pair of free throws by
Joey Lenox but committed four turnovers over the final stretch. West Texas A&M (15-6, 9-5) hit six free throws over the last 1:07 to put the game away.
Hanif Nixon-Hughes chipped in eight points in the second half and
Keenen Coleman scored seven of his 11 in the second half. The game featured seven lead changes and the Rams' biggest lead was five in the second half.
Angelo State was down five at the half as the Rams were outshot 52 percent to 38 percent in the first half.
LaDonn Huckaby and
Justin Walling scored six points each all by way of three pointers.
The Buffs, much like in the first meeting, hit 50 percent of their shots from the field. West Texas A&M hit 14 of 26 free throws on the night while the Rams hit six of nine from the charity stripe.
West Texas A&M was led by Donald Sims' 17 points.
The Rams last three losses have been by a combined 10 points.
Angelo State will return to the court on Wednesday night in Kingsville to play Texas A&M-Kingsville with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
