Belles Set for South Central Shootout

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team is on the bus and headed toward Durant, Okla., to play six games in three days in the 2012 South Central Shootout at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex beginning Friday.

“The girls will be tested during this long weekend,” Angelo State head coach Travis Scott said. “Although there are a lot of games, this is what we prepare for in the offseason. We prep for the early season tournaments through our conditioning and lifting.”

The No. 16 Rambelles (5-2) open against Southern Arkansas at 10 a.m. before seeing Arkansas at Monticello at noon in Friday's action. Saturday's lineup includes Henderson State (noon) and Missouri Western State (4 p.m.) with Emporia State (10 a.m.) and Washburn (2 p.m.) on Sunday.

“This tournament creates a great opportunity to go play teams in our region that are not in our conference,” Scott said. “We get to play teams from the Great American Conference and the MIAA so we're excited.”

As a team, the Belles are hitting .380 and have outscored their opponent 57-31. Angelo State's offense is led by Elsamartina Apo who is hitting .765 with eight RBIs during her seven-game hitting streak. In the circle, sophomore Mary Kate McKay is 3-0 with a 1.71 earned run average. In her last two outings, the lefty has two complete games and allowed just eight hits.
