Rambelles Open LSC Play With Tie Against Mustangs

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State was one second away from claiming a win but ultimately settled with a 1-1 tie against Midwestern State on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Rambelles (2-2-1, 0-0-1 LSC) led for 49 minutes and 53 seconds after an Ashley Exford goal in the 39th minute of play, but would experience heartbreak as Midwestern State's Ashley Cottrell scored an unassisted goal with one second remaining in the game to force overtime.

“We were in disbelief when it happened,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “We just needed to clear the ball and we win the game. One touch to put it in the air or slow down the play at any point in the game and we win.”

The goal was Exford's first of her career at ASU and was assisted by Kara Edwards for her first career assist. Hanna Horeis led the Belles with six shots with three on goal, while Lauren Carnes added three shots and Lauren Bateman another two. Goalkeeper Danielle Edwards finished with two saves in 110 minutes of play for the Rambelles.

Angelo State had four shots combined in the two overtime sessions but were unable to score, while they limited MSU to one shot in the first overtime and none in the second. The Rambelles, who are now 1-0-1 in overtime games this season, were disappointed in a tie but held firm not to let the last second goal turn into a loss.

“I'm really proud that we didn't crumble in overtime,” McCorkle said. “In the past and with other teams, a goal like that can really hurt you and create momentum for the other team that they carry over into overtime. We did a good job creating chances in overtime and did a good job to tie.”

The Rambelles return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Abilene Christian at the ASU Soccer Field.
