No. 11 Belles Set For Tuesday Showdown Against TexAnns

Belle Yeah (Tarleton)

SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State volleyball team will host Tarleton State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Junell Center in its third Lone Star Conference match of the season.

The Belles (8-2, 2-0 LSC) are on a three-match winning streak and have won nine straight sets after sweeping Cameron and Midwestern State last weekend. ASU comes into the match as the No. 11-ranked team in the nation after moving up two spots in the AVCA poll and enter with a six-match winning streak over the TexAnns (7-3, 2-0 LSC).

“Tarleton is extremely athletic and they have one of the best blockers in the nation that we'll have to contend with,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “They do a good job of staying focused and playing with emotion. We are going to have to rise to the occasion to get a win against them.”

Like the Belles, Tarleton State is coming off wins over Midwestern State and Cameron in the opening weekend of LSC play. Katie Covell leads TSU with 100 kills with Nikki McNorton at 96, while Danielle Barker has 340 assists. McNorton also leads the LSC with 54 blocks.

ASU carries a .239 hitting percentage into the match and are limiting opponents to a .108 percentage. Shelbi Goode leads the Belles with 124 kills this season, with Kaelen Valdez adding 82, Chelsea Gibson 74 and Maddie Huth 66. Gibson comes into Tuesday's match needing only one kill to reach 1,000 in her career. Alex Woolsey, who has 4,033 assists in her career, leads ASU with 342 assists this season with Shelby Wilt at 150 digs this season. Wilt has accumulated 735 career digs through the first 10 matches of her sophomore season.

“There were things that we focused on last week that really showed progress in our matches last weekend,” Waddington said. “We played a lot better and were really consistent in both matches. I would still like to see us handle the ball better and stay within our system better. We have to nail that down this week. Our setter-hitter connections were really good with us hitting for a high percentage. That was something that we wanted to improve on and we did.”
