SAN ANGELO – Shelbi Goode recorded 17 kills and Alex Woolsey added 43 assists as No. 11 Angelo State swept its third straight opponent in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) win over Tarleton State on Tuesday in the Junell Center.

Chelsea Gibson slammed down 12 kills on the night – including her career 1,000th in the first set off an assist from Woolsey to make the score 4-1 in the Belles' favor. The Belles (9-2, 3-0 LSC) had a .228 hitting percentage and have now won 15 straight sets dating back to a 3-1 win over Lewis University at the Colorado Premiere Challenge.

“I think we came out in the first set and set the tone for what we needed to do,” said Emily Booth, who added seven kills and four digs. “They fought back in the third set but we fought back. We come in with confidence but at the same time we know that anyone is capable of beating us so we can't take anything for granted.”

Shelby Wilt led the Belles with 18 digs, while Woolsey added 11 and Kaelen Valdez 10 in a match where ASU had 75 digs. Maddie Huth had three block assists and one solo effort while also coming up with six digs and six kills.

“We defended like crazy tonight,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “We gave ourselves more swings and chances to score. We had 47 digs after the second set which is a huge number. That's a testament to our kids really scrapping and fighting hard to give our setter chances to set our kids.

Angelo State limited Tarleton State (7-4, 2-1 LSC) to a .097 hitting percentage and did not let the TexAnns enjoy a single lead until the third set. Nikki McNorton led Tarleton State with four blocks and nine kills.

“Our level of play is continuing to rise,” Waddington said. “As the level of competition is getting stronger, we are getting better and better.”

Angelo State returns to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday against McMurry University at the Junell Center for a non-conference match. The Belles will wrap up the week with a 2 p.m. match on Saturday at Abilene Christian.
