No. 11 Belles to Host McMurry in Non-Conference, In-Region Match

SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State volleyball team will venture back outside of Lone Star Conference play on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a home match against McMurry in the Junell Center.

The War Hawks (6-2) are the final non-conference opponent in the regular season for Angelo State (9-2, 3-0 LSC) and the Belles will enter with a 6-2 record against non-conference opponents. The Belles, who are outhitting their opponents .238 to .107 this season, come into the match on a four-match winning streak and have won 15 straight sets.  ASU is 2-0 this season against Heartland Conference opponents with sweeps of St. Mary's and St. Edward's during the Hilltopper/Rattler Classic.

This will be the first match between the two schools in 32 years. The Belles hold a 7-0 all-time advantage over the War Hawks - most recently a 2-0 (15-1, 15-2) win in October of 1980.

McMurry comes into the match having won three straight, most recently a five-set win over St. Mary's last Saturday. The War Hawks are 0-1 this season against LSC opponents with a tough five-set defeat to Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Javelinas' tournament.

Shelbi Goode leads the Belles with 141 kills this season, while Chelsea Gibson has 86 and Kaelen Valdez 85. Maddie Huth leads the team with 33 blocks and has 72 kills, while Alex Woolsey is ranked fifth nationally in assists per set and comes into the match with 385 this season. Shelby Wilt has been a steady force for the defense with 169 digs with Valdez adding 116 digs and Woolsey 102.

M.J. Vickers is a player to watch on the McMurry side of the court as she comes into San Angelo with 101 kills, while Peyton Evans has 235 assists.

The Belles return to LSC action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a trip to Abilene Christian. The Wildcats (4-6, 1-1 LSC) host Tarleton State on Friday.
