DENTON – The Angelo State soccer team suffered its first Lone Star Conference loss of the season in a 2-1 decision against Texas Woman's on Sunday at the TWU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (4-3-1, 2-1-1 LSC) and Pioneers (4-3-1, 3-1-0 LSC) were scoreless at halftime before a Mariel Parra header in the 66
th minute of play gave TWU the first lead. ASU quickly responded as freshman
Teegan Courtney had an unassisted goal off a corner kick deflection, but TWU's Sara Alvarez would deliver the game-winner for TWU with an unassisted goal in the 80
th minute.
“I think overall we did well this weekend,” said ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle, whose team was coming off a 2-1 win over Texas A&M-Commerce. “It still comes down to scoring goals for me. We need to be able to consistently score more than one goal in a game. We have to press earlier and get more goals in the first 15-20 minutes of play. We are creating good chances but we have to capitalize on them.
“We won most of the headers today but got caught in two minds on the final goal.” McCorkle added. “They took a flick at it and made it. The shot went in, but I don't think it's a normal shot that we have to go back and practice.”
Angelo State finished the game with nine shots, with
Ashley Exford having three and
Hanna Horeis two. Courtney's goal was the first in her career. Danielle Edwards finished the game with two saves in goal for the Rambelles.
“It probably won't be the prettiest goal she ever has, but they all count the same,” said McCorkle, of Courtney's goal. “She put herself in the right spot and got it across the line.”
Angelo State continues its four-game road trip on Friday at West Texas A&M before playing Eastern New Mexico on Sunday.
