SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team begins a three-match week at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Junell Center before traveling to play at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M this weekend.

The No.11 Belles (11-2, 4-0 Lone Star Conference) swept their three matches last week, including beating Abilene Christian on Saturday. ASU enters this week with a six-match winning streak and have won its last 18 sets. TAMU-Kingsville (6-6, 0-4 LSC) is coming off losses to Midwestern State and Cameron last weekend.

“Kingsville is a very athletic team with some very good players,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “It's a long road trip for them just like it is for us when we go there. It's a challenging trip and it's to our advantage tomorrow.”

The Belles are 4-0 at the Junell Center this season and are hitting at a .277 percentage in those matches. ASU is 49-10 all-time against the Javelinas, including beating them both times last season. ASU swept its home match against TAMU-Kingsville in 2011 but were forced to a five-set win in Kingsville. Chelsea Gibson led the Belles with 16 kills and Alex Woolsey had 52 assists in that win in South Texas, while Shelby Wilt added 23 digs.

Dedra Brown leads Texas A&M-Kingsville with 156 kills this season, while Sarah Fountain comes into San Angelo with 320 assists (9.14 per set).

While this weekend's match at West Texas A&M looms as one of the most anticipated of the season, Waddington knows that overlooking the Javelinas is not the wisest approach.

“We are going talk to the girls about not looking past this match,” Waddington said. “It's human nature to look past some things when you have a big match coming up, but we can't do that. We have ourselves in a hole because of the regional matches that we lost in Denver so we are aware that we have to take care of business each time we step on the court. I think our group knows not to let up.

“Our connections with our hitters have gotten a lot better since the beginning of the year,” Waddington said. “We are serving a lot tougher and digging a lot of balls that were hitting the court early in the season. We want to defend like crazy and score in transition and that's what we are doing right now.”
