Rams Fall Just Short of No. 12/17 West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas –
Angelo State drove inside No. 12/17 West Texas 20 yard line with under a minute to go but the Rams fell just short losing 34-30 in Canyon on Saturday night.

The Rams (2-5, 0-3 LSC) was forced to drive the field after West Texas A&M (6-1, 3-1 LSC) took a 34-30 lead with 1:51 to go in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Vaughan to Aaron Harris.

Kyle Washington drove the Rams 66 yards down the length of the field to the ASU nin10-yard line but unlike the end of the first half ASU couldn't punch it in. Two incomplete passes and a rush of one yard by Jermie Calhoun setup a fourth down. Washington lofted a pass to Talon Smith but it fell incomplete.

Washington threw for a career high 298 passing yards and a touchdown on 22-of-37 passing and added 106 yards on the ground with another touchdown.

The two teams traded scores on the first drives of the game. WT started with a five play 75 yard drive while ASU answered with a seven play 93 yard drive to tie the game.

WT's Sergio Castillo kicked a 47-yard field goal and Reid Layton booted a 22-yard field goal to keep the knotted at 10.

ASU went down 12-10 after Jermie Calhoun was stopped in the end zone by WT's Ethan Westbrook. The Buffs would receive the punt but Ryan Clapsaddle made a play.

Clapsaddle intercepted Vaughan and returned it to the WT 32-yard line. The interception led to a 17 yard Blake Smith touchdown run and a 16-12 advantage. Smith finished the night with 89 yards and two touchdowns.

ASU took a 23-9 lead at halftime after Washington hit Joey Knight on a 25-yard strike right before the end of the first half.

The Rams extended their halftime lead to 30-19 on a Smith two-yard touchdown but would be held to 11 yards on its next three drives.  WT would score two touchdowns and a field goal all in the fourth quarter including the go ahead touchdown.

Knight led the Rams with 106 yards receiving and nine catches with Quinn Reels chipping in five catches for 96 yards.

Rush Seaver led the defense with10 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

It is the third game this season the Rams have played in that the game was decided in the final minute of the game.

ASU will return home to face Midwestern State at 6 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
