Belles Take Down Incarnate Word 60-51

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Incarnate Word 60-51 in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center.

The Belles (6-4) defense held the Cardinals (6-5 to 28.8-percent shooting on the day and forced 16 turnovers. The Belles hit 45.5-percent of their shots including 50.0-percent from behind the three-point line. Angelo State won the rebounding battle 39-30 over Incarnate Word.

Hillari Adam led all scorers with 19 points and all rebounders with nine. It is the second-straight game of at least 18 points for the junior. It is the eighth time Adam has scored in double figures. Amanda Weaver added 13 points and went three-of-four from three.

The Belles defense was the story of the first half limiting Incarnate Word to 20.8-percent shooting and forcing 11 turnovers. ASU jumped out to 13-9 lead before a Leah LeMaire jumper spurred an 8-0 run to go up 21-9 with 7:19 to play. The Belles were able to score 14 points off 11 turnovers in the first half to take a 28-16 advantage at the break.

The two teams came out at halftime and ASU was up 35-25 at the 16:11 mark. Adam hit a jumper to spark a 10-5 run to extend the Belles lead to 45-30. Incarnate Word would fight back and cut the lead to 56-49 with a 10-2 run with 1:08 to play. Weaver would hit four free throws over the final minute of the game for the 60-51 final.

The Belles will open Lone Star Conference play on Thurs., Jan 2 at Texas A&M-Commerce at 5:30 p.m.
