ASU Athletics to Induct Five into Hall of Honor on Saturday Night

SAN ANGELO - Former Angelo State and San Angelo College student-athletes, Gail Allison Bullard, Tranell Hawkins, Benjamin Kelly and Claudia Lopez and former athletic director and volleyball coach Kathleen Brasfield have been selected for induction into ASU's Athletic Hall of Honor in January.

The five member class is the sixth class to enter the hall, which was established in 2004. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Sat., Jan. 11 in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center. The Class of 2014 will also be introduced during halftime of the women's basketball game. .

The class includes its first inductee strictly from the San Angelo College era.

Tickets for the induction ceremony will go on sale now. Tickets will cost $25 a piece and will be available through ASU's Athletics Office at 325-942-2264. No tickets will be sold at the door.

The nominees and their accomplishments are:

Kathleen Brasfield – Volleyball Coach, 1978-1995 Athletic Director, 1982-2012
Hired in 1978 as ASU's head volleyball coach, Brasfield devoted the majority of her professional career to the university, taking over the post of women's athletic director in 1982 and overall athletic director in 2004.  Prior to the 2005 season, she retired as one of the winningest volleyball coaches in D-II history to focus on her responsibilities as athletic director.

In her 26 years as ASU head volleyball coach, Brasfield led the Rambelles to 647 wins.  She was named the LSC Coach of the Year a league-record eight times and retired as one of the top five winningest active coaches in NCAA D-II.  She also led the Rambelles to seven league titles, including four consecutive LSC crowns from 1982-85.

Her administrative accomplishments include establishing the first university endowment solely for Angelo State athletics, thanks to the support of Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand.  A separate gift from the LeGrand's provided a new scoreboard at the subsequently renamed LeGrand Sports Complex, formerly known as the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex, and for improvements to the track facility prior to the NCAA D-II National Championships in 2009 when ASU hosted the meet for the fifth time in school history.

Honors and awards for Brasfield include being named a member of the LSC's All-75 Year Team in 2007 as a volleyball coach and earning the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award for her contributions to the achievement of women in sports. Brasfield served as chair of the Division II Management Council in 2010 and receiving the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award for Division II's West Region in 2011. Brasfield was also awarded the 2013 Division 2 Athletics Directors Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gail Allison Bullard – Volleyball, 1989-1992
Allison Bullard, a volleyball player from 1989-1992, still holds the school record for career kills with 1,934 and career blocks with 475. The San Angelo native graduated from Central in 1989 and was a key part of three Lone Star Conference title teams in 1989, 1991 and 1992. She was also named to the LSC All-Conference team all four years.

Allison Bullard led the team in hitting percentage all four years as a Belle and was tops on the team in kills (1990, 1991), service aces (1990, 1992) and digs (1991, 1992). She still holds the record for most block assists in a single game with 15 and the season record for attack percentage at .347.

She was named to the All-LSC second team in 1989 and to the first team from 1990-1992 while also being the LSC tournament most valuable player in 1991 and 1992. Allison was an AVCA All-Region selection in 1991 and 1992

Tranel Hawkins – Track & Field, 1983-1984
Hawkins was a two-time NCAA Division II national champion in the 400-meter hurdles and a two-time All-American during his time at Angelo State. He is a member of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Hall of Fame and was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team.

He won two Lone Star Conference titles in the 400-meter hurdles and holds all top ten marks in the 400-meter hurdles at Angelo State. After winning the 1983 NCAA Division II title, Hawkins competed at the Division I Championships finishing second. He continued his career at the U.S. Olympic Trials running a 48.28 to capture the final spot for the 1984 Olympics where he placed sixth overall. 

Ben Kelly  - Football, 1953-1954
Former San Angelo College football player Benjamin Kelly was one of the first African American football players to compete for a previously all-white football team in Texas.

Kelly played at San Angelo College from 1953-1954 and was a two-time All-Pioneer Conference first team selection. Kelly was the recipient of the Nathan's Jeweler Ram football award in 1954. The Rams went 10-8-1 during Kelly's two seasons on campus. He played for head coach Max Bumgardner and assistant coach Phil George.

Kelly graduated from Blackshear, an all-black high school in San Angelo, in 1950. He went on to play at the University of Illinois for two seasons and served two years in the U.S. Army before coming back to San Angelo.

He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers and played one season before playing a year with the New York Giants under Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry. Kelly spent 29 years running the San Angelo Boys and Girls Club before retiring in 1996.

The first game Kelly played in was a 26-0 season opening win on September 19, 1953 over Phoenix College at Bobcat Stadium, eight months prior to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Claudia Lopez – Softball, 2003-2004
Lopez, a Rambelle softball player and former coach, holds the ASU records for strikeouts (386), lowest ERA (2.00) and strikeouts per game (7.16). She was a key member of the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship team and later served as an assistant coach from 2006-2009.

During her playing career the Rambelles went 96-21 with Lopez holding a 49-11 recording during that span. The Douglas, Ariz., native was named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2004 and to the LSC All-Academic team. Lopez was also named the 2004 South Central Regional Tournament most valuable player.

After playing for ASU, Lopez served as assistant coach from 2006-2009. She was an integral part of the 2007 and 2009 teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II Softball World Series.
