CANYON – Abbie Lynn recorded a career-high 21 kills and
Alexa Johnson distributed 53 assists to help lead Angelo State to the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championships with a 3-1 win over Eastern New Mexico in the quarterfinals on Thursday at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
The Belles (20-7) will now face Cameron in the semifinals of the tournament at 5 p.m. on Friday after the Aggies earned a five-set win over Texas Woman's on Thursday. ASU has now won 20 or more matches in each of the past four seasons and have also advanced to the conference tournament semifinals the past six seasons. Â TWU and Cameron were scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. in Canyon.
"Abbie was on fire today," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "Every time we needed a big kill, she made it happen. Our middles were also very productive. Alexa did a nice job of moving the ball around and kept Eastern off balance.
Arielle Bond also played well for us. Her blocking, especially early on was a big factor."
Lynn finished the match with a .500 attacking percentage for the Belles with only one error, while
Daeleigh Castile added 12 kills with a .524 attacking percentage and
Brianna Sotello and
Zoey Hanrahan each had 10 kills. Sotello finished the match with a double-double with 11 digs to go along with her 11 kills, while Bond finished the match with a season-high five blocks and also added nine kills for the Belles on 22 attacks (.273 attacking percentage).
Johnson also provided 10 digs to go along with her 54 assists. With Johnson leading the offense from the setter position, ASU finished the match with a .317 team attacking percentage.
Shelby Wilt led the Belles with 21 digs in the match and
Katie MacLeay. Wilt was named the LSC Libero of the Year on Wednesday, while MacLeay earned the LSC Academic Player of the Year at the LSC Championship banquet.
The Belles, who moved to 3-0 this season against ENMU, opened the match with a .500 attacking percentage and finished it off by hitting .400 in the third set and .389 in the fourth. ASU was blocked 10 times by the Zias, but the Belles also had seven blocks and had a 60-44 dig advantage. ASU's .317 team attacking percentage is the second best of the year with only a .323 attacking percentage in a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville topping it. Lynn, who is an Amarillo native, had a previous career-high with 18 kills in matches against TWU and Midwestern State earlier this season.
The loss by ENMU ends its season at 13-18. Agatha Gibbons led the Zias with 14 kills and nine block assists, while Lindsey Barron had 12 kills and Courtney Lawson provided 10 kills and 16 digs.Â
