SAN ANGELO – Demario Mayfield recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and
Marsell Holden,
Chris Jones,
Raijon Kelly and
Kyle Vasher each scored in double digits as the Angelo State basketball team cruised to a 104-48 non-conference win over McMurry on Tuesday at the Junell Center.
Holden joined Mayfield with 14 points on a night where he hit four 3-pointers, while Jones went for 12 points and eight assists and Kelly had 13 points on a 6-for-8 shooting performance from the field. Vasher added 10 points and
Omari Gudul contributed nine points and five rebounds in the win. ASU (3-0) had 13 players score against the War Hawks (1-1) and shot 54.5 percent from the field, including shooting 63 percent in the first half which took the Rams to halftime with a 62-16 lead.
"I think the strength of our team is our depth and we just have to keep stressing to these guys to keep playing for the guy next to them," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "There's not a guy on this team that is playing the minutes he's used to in the past, so we have to make sure our depth continues to be strength and doesn't become a weakness by letting selfishness creep in. We're early in the season, but these guys have been great to coach."
The Rams trailed only once in the game when Jordan Holmes hit a jump shot for the War Hawks 37 seconds into the game. The shot led to a 9-0 run by the Rams with Mayfield and Jones each knocking down two shots after Kelly opened ASU scoring with a jumper 51 seconds into the game. ASU had a 21-6 lead on a layup by Jones and was up 31-8 when
DeQuavious Wagner hit a 3-pointer 10 minutes into action. Jones gave the Rams a 30-point lead with a jump shot at the 4:25 mark of the first half and ASU never looked back as it took a 56-point win on its home court.
"We're still working on our chemistry, but everyone on the team wants to see each other succeed," Kelly said. "Nobody on our team is selfish and we are all talented. We're letting everyone show off what they can do and also showing teams that we are not one dimensional."
Jones, who was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, added four steals and four rebounds to his stat sheet, while
Bilal Richardson scored eight points and Wagner and
Brentine Taylor each had seven points. ASU's defense limited McMurry to 29 percent shooting in the game and forced 22 turnovers. Â
The Rams return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday against Arkansas Tech at the Junell Center and will then finish off a five-game home stand to start the season with a 7 p.m. game next Tuesday against Oklahoma Wesleyan.
