No. 23 Rams cruise to 34-point win over OKWU

SAN ANGELO – Chris Jones scored a season-high 20 points and added five assists, three steals and four rebounds to help lead the No. 23-ranked Angelo State basketball team to a 97-63 non-conference win over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday at the Junell Center.

The Rams (5-0) shot 60.3 percent from the field in the game and limited the Eagles to only 33.9 percent in a commanding win which capped a five-game home stand to start the season. ASU now goes on a three-game road trip against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents which begins on Friday against Colorado Mesa and on Saturday against Western State Colorado at the Colorado Mesa Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Rams will then play Western New Mexico on Monday before returning home to host UTPB next Saturday at the Junell Center.

Demario Mayfield led the Rams with 15 points in the first half and finished the game with 18 points, while Marsell Holden added 11 points and Brentine Taylor and Bilal Richardson each scored eight. Angelo State led the game 51-29 at halftime after shooting 57.6 percent from the field and knocking down five 3-pointers and shot 63.3 percent from the field in the second half. ASU connected on 13 of 18 shots from the free-throw line and owned a 42-32 rebounding advantage throughout the game.

Mayfield and Holden each connected on two 3-pointers in the game, while Tommy Woolridge, Dakota Rawls, Raijon Kelly and DeQuavious Wagner hit one 3-pointer each for the Rams. Kelly finished the game with five points and four assists, while Omari Gudul had six points and five rebounds. Woolridge led the Rams with six assists to go along with seven points against the Eagles.

Mayfield continues to lead the Rams with 15.6 points per game and has scored in double-figures in four of five games this season, while Jones is averaging 12.8 points per game and is tied with Kelly for the team lead with 27 assists. Mayfield also leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game with Gudul, Richardson and Jones each averaging just over four rebounds per game. Angelo State is averaging 94.4 points per game this season and is outscoring its opponents by 34.2 points per game. The Rams also scored 97 points in their season opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State and have a 104-point performance on their resume coming in a 104-48 win over McMurry last Tuesday.
